City taxpayers and residents who attended the Oct. 6 City Council meeting said they were concerned that the council is considering cutting out established and informative segments of the meeting in the name of reducing the length of the regular meetings.
Within the council members meet, there is a conference meeting scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. before the regular meetings are scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Often, meetings have for lasted until past 11 p.m.
In an effort to substantially decrease the length of the meetings, council members have been brainstorming options. One of the suggestions was to eliminate the public-comment portion when members of the gallery can address members on issues, usually about topics within meeting agenda.
That proposal does not sit too well with residents such as Gloria Stewart and former Councilman William Lewis. Stewart said she believes cutting the public portion would infringed upon her rights.
“The idea of taking away our comment time is disturbing to me. We only get 10 minutes to speak now. “Two meetings a month gives me 20 minutes a month to address you guys,” said Stewart. “I pay $7,000 in property taxes, so when it’s time to vote. I can put my vote where it counts. How am I supposed to do that if I can’t ask questions and get answers from the people who are supposed to be in a position to give them to us?”
