The Orange High School varsity football team keeps piling up quality wins.
One week after knocking off a good Shabazz team, the Tornadoes defeated previously-undefeated Cedar Grove, 42-33, last Saturday Oct. 22 at Bell Stadium on Homecoming in a Super Essex Conference crossover game.
Senior running back Jayquan Watson rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns and scored on an 80-yard kickoff return, and junior quarterback Safee Fisher passed for 155 yards and three touchdowns to power the Tornadoes to their fourth straight victory.
Senior 6-foot-4 receiver Kassan Messiah caught two of Fisher’s touchdown passes as the Tornadoes improved to 5-2.
Cedar Grove fell to 6-1.
Fisher connected with another 6-4 senior receiver, Farrod Clarke, on a 15-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to put OHS up 7-0.
Cedar Grove tied it at 7-7 on Joe Slattery’s one-yard run later in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Messiah caught touchdown passes of 35 and 30 yards to give the Tornadoes a 21-7 halftime lead.
Watson scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter. After Charlie Dorman ran for a one-yard run for Cedar Grove, Watson returned the ensuing kickoff into the end zone to extend the lead to 35-13 later in the third quarter.
Watson had a 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Cedar Grove rallied with three touchdowns in the fourth. Slattery threw two scoring passes and Michael Bocchino recovered a fumble in the end zone. But the Tornadoes held on for the victory.
Senior Marquiso Jean booted six extra-points for OHS.
Defensively, senior Michael White and Watson each had 11 tackles from their linebacker positions, and senior defensive back Kevin Boateng and sophomore defensive back D’Andre Smith each had eight tackles to lead OHS. Boateng also had a fumble recovery. Senior tackle Keville Campbell, linebacker Messiah, senior lineman Corey Fields and senior linebacker Malik Watson each had one sack for the Tornadoes. Malik Watson also had an interception and Messiah finished with seven tackles.
The Tornadoes will visit Glen Ridge this Saturday Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at Hurrell Field in a SEC crossover game. Glen Ridge fell to Caldwell, 31-19, last Saturday Oct. 22 in Glen Ridge for its fourth straight loss to fall to 3-4.
The Tornadoes are looking to earn a playoff spot in the North Jersey Section 2, Group 2 playoffs for the fourth straight season. Teams with at least a .500 mark by their eighth game and in the top eight in the power-points standings earn berths. OHS is in third place in the power-points standings with 92 points. Madison, the defending champion, is first with 113 points. Summit is second with 101 points.
