Officials with the Orange School District have announced the addition of a new member to the administrative staff.
Paula Howard will join the district as deputy superintendent of schools, said Superintendent Ronald Lee. Howard formerly served as superintendent of Plainfield schools before taking a leave for family matters and consulting work.
Howard will assume a leadership role in the newly designated position, said Lee. Among her responsibilities will be the development and operation of the district’s curriculum and instructional programs.
“With her background and experience in urban school settings, Dr. Howard will bring a unique perspective to improving the achievement levels of the district’s 10 schools and alternative program,” said Lee.
Howard has worked as a special education teacher and team leader before she became a district supervisor in Pittsburgh’s public schools. She was responsible for curriculum development, instruction and assessment and professional development for 10 elementary schools and two parochial schools.
She also served as an assistant vice principal for the Carmalt Elementary School in Pittsburgh, a magnet school for 1,100 students from across the city.
Her experience there led Howard to become principal for the Fulton Academy of Geographic and Life Sciences, a community choice school for 750 students.
