Last week’s annual New Jersey Black Ministers Conference included talks with the major gubernatorial candidates. The organization’s leader said an endorsement will be issued soon.
Attendees to the conference Sept. 29-30 said it lived up to expectations when it came to the group’s reputation as political and social reformers who are busy doing “God’s work” on Earth.
A special event was a town hall meeting devoted to health care reform. Representatives from government, insurance and medical agencies discussed the proposals being considered by Congress.
The conference closed with a gubernatorial forum with the major candidates.
Incumbent Jon Corzine and his challengers, Republican and former U.S. attorney Christopher Christie and independent Chris Daggett, had a chance to make the case why they should lead New Jersey. They also had the opportunity, rare in an election cycle, to respond to questions from the audience.
“We were happy that all three candidates came and had a chance to speak to the council members and the audience,” Jackson said. “I will make my endorsement next week. Other than that, I believe that the conference went very well.”
Jackson said he was especially pleased by the level of participation from the members of the education panel. He said many issues relevant to the effort to improve education in New Jersey were discussed, and Jackson believes it was very productive.
“I was pleased and very surprised because we had a panel on education and I invited people who I did not think would show up but they actually showed up,” said Jackson, who serves as a member of the Orange Board of Education. He also serves as a board member of Excellent Education for Everyone, which supports school choice.
