DOT to roll on repairs to Interstate 280

By John Zucal, Managing Editor
Drivers on Interstate 280 have complained for a long time about its condition. Those arguments should become minimal after a resurfacing project is complete.
After delays in getting the project started, the state Department of Transportation will begin reconstruction of the highway between Livingston and Newark, which will occur during the next year. The section includes roadway in Orange, West Orange and East Orange.
In a statement last week to announce the go-ahead, Senate President Richard Codey said he spoke with department officials early in 2008 about the roadway’s physical condition. Potholes, he said, were a problem, along with deteriorated concrete along the bridges. At the time, the department announced it would begin a project to extend repairs which had been finished between Exits 13 and 15 in East Orange and Newark.
“The I-280 improvement project will improve roadway quality and safety on this high-volume section, which is currently compromised by potholes and poor pavement quality,” said Gov. Jon Corzine when the project was announced in July 2008.
Interstate 280 runs from Interstate 80 in Parsippany-Troy Hills in Morris County to Kearny and the New Jersey Turnpike in Hudson County. It also has an exit which connects it with the Garden State Parkway in East Orange. The project along the middle portion was expected to be concluded in March 2010, however, delays forced the postponement of work until this year.
The project has an estimate cost of $23.2 million. The state will provide approximately $2.5 million, said Codey, and federal funding would cover the remainder. The year’s delay led to a $1.6 million increase in the project’s cost.
For Codey, whose 27th Legislative District covers Livingston, Orange and West Orange, resurfacing the 8-mile stretch is necessary for more than driver comfort. Interstate 80 continues into Pennsylvania, while Interstate 95 connects with the Lincoln Tunnel into New York City.
